There isn't really a "selection set" tool as far as I know. But---
A Group is a possibility for this.
Another way might be to set up a Filter, and then associate all those items with the Filter
and then use a View Template to select just those items.
Another possibility is to use Worksets to display just those objects.

Filter works for building elements, but I can't find a way to add grids to a filter.

You can set up a Filter and select Grids.
Then you need to create a new Project Parameter called Grid Visibility.
Set it to Y/N under Visibility category under Project Parameter settings.
Then, when you select the Grid, there will be a check box for Visibility.
Now when you type VG, go to Filters, and you can check/uncheck visibility for the Grid Filter.
see attached.

Lack of a selection set tool can be frustrating. You could download the Trial version of Ideate Explorer to accomplish the selection set as you describe with both building elements and grids. See screenshot. We have designed this tool to be similar to "Quick Select" and welcome any feedback.

Glynnis,
That looks very nice.
Might have to give it a try.

Selection set tool:
Select something, go to manage>selection>save.
But you need to manually add new objects. I'll look into the other suggestions, thanks.

Selecting elements from Category and Workset seem to unselect the one of them. It's not working like I would expect. I might be missing something.

That's great! I'm not sure I got the yes/no right, but I see how it works. The thing is I actually need to select the grids and structural steel at same time. And I need to export them from a 3D view. The filter works good for setting up a view. But I currently still need to select the grids in one view, change to a 3D view and select the steel. So the Manage>Selection still seems like the best option, but it requires a lot of maintenance. Unless there is a way to select objects based on filters.

Set up the Filters in View Template--which includes only the Grids and Structural Steel.
Apply the View Template to your 3D view. Now the only things displayed are Grids and Steel.
Select all with the window. Done.

Sorry--you are correct. The Grids will only show up in 3D views in the Conceptual Massing environment--
wish this would be available in the normal Project as well.
A good one for the Wishlist, if it's not already there.

Argh!
This is one of those things that just doesn't make sense.
The Selection Set tool is in Structural, but not Architecture.
