View Full Version : Simple Impossible Roof

The roof in the attached image seems to me like it should be pretty simple to create (ignore the 'cutouts' in the selected half - those don't determine the outcome). If I try to create it as a single roof it returns the error 'can't make footprint roof'. All overhangs and eave heights are the same, and I've tried just drawing it and using pick walls. The only way I can get this roof is to split it in half and make 2 separate entities. Has anyone experienced this also?

Anthony, I just tried to make a similar roof and had no problem.

Is that the view range cutting off the ridge, or is that how the roof is to be done? And are all the walls extending to core?

Which version of Revit are you doing this in? In past releases Revit wouldn't allow a sketch inside when a slope was being used. It works fine in 2012 for me these days.

Here is the project file along with an image of what I'm trying to do. When I get to the point in the image and select finish, it says it can't make the roof. I am using extend to core, and using an overhang of 1'-4". The roof does have a central 'well' - that is, it's not being cut by the view range.
I actually attached files this time. .-)
Edit: This is in Revit Architecture 2012.

I think the issue isn't the "hole", rather the conundrum of trying to work out how to resolve the ridge issues that are more apparent in the image attached. As a single roof Revit can't reconcile the ridges. If it could the hole would be no problem. Two halves will get you there though.

Set a plane or Level and use the Cutoff Level under the Properties

I played with this for a few minutes. If I draw a roof very similar it works. If I work with the roof you have I am having issues with the two 4' line segments at the north side. If I turn off the slope there, the roof creates itself but isn't correct. I would do what Steve suggests and live with the two roofs. If you need to schedule roofs the schedule can be set up to read as a single roof.

Thanks for looking at this, everyone. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Maybe we should get the factory to hire the guy who made the ADT roof tool, since it handles this roof with no problem... .-)

The two large portions of the roof opposite each other seem to be where Revit objects to this footprint. I find it will make the roof without complaint when they are not part of the equation. If you build different parts of the roof separately you'll find where Revit doesn't understand how to finish the sketch. The ridge on one side is finishing slightly higher than the main roof. It has nothing to do with the "hole" in the roof. It's the overall roof itself. If ADT/ACA resolves the roof then the math must be less fussy?

Hmph. I just tried it without using pick walls, and it works...
That said, I think I'd still prefer using pick walls even if it means I have 2 roofs instead of one. It was able to figure out the ridge...
