The way this command works should be fixed. You should be able to select objects that are completely obscured, to show as hidden lines. As it is now, at least part of it has to not be obscured to be able to select it. As far as I can tell, this is a bug and not by design because once the object is selected to show hidden lines, it can then be completely obscured and still show up.
