Phasing of roof shaft

I'm a Revit Rookie and trying to cut a shaft in a roof for a renovation so I can have a new modified roof over. I want to have 2 drawings on a sheet, one showing "existing roof" and the other showing "proposed roof". Trouble is the shaft shows up on teh existing roof, I don't seem to be able to make the shaft only applicable to the new construction. Does anyone have a tip?

Make sure your phases and filters are correct, Existing and New Construction for phases, filters are Show All and Show Previous + New respectively.

Make sure your new shaft walls have been created in the New Construction phase.

Maybe I should call it a "roof opening". Existing roof, create vertical opening and it "greys out" the option to change phasing of the opening. there is no walls. I want a new opening in an old roof, one that can only be seen in the phasing for the new work and not in the "existing" view.
