I am working on a small phased renovation project where my structural consultant is also on revit 2012. This is the first time either of us has worked like this

I provided him with our model, he then built his structural model and sent it to me. In the file there is only the structural elements he has added, and some generic walls which I think duplicate mine (for reference only)

I've linked his file, and aligned it to mine. (I don't know why it was way off in the distance since he did start with my file, but I'll leave that for another time.)

So my issue is that I'm having troubles adjusting the visibility/graphic overides of the linked file. When I go into the revit links tab, I can hide the entire link in any particular view, but it seems I do not have individual "component" control. Ideally, I like to try and model most things as opposed to drawing details components over a halftoned model and then hide the model completely.

What I'd like to do is show my building section with his structure as a part of my section, but I'm left with things like their levels that I can't seem to hide. If worse comes to worse I always could just draw detail components over their model and them hide it, but I'd like to try and figure this out if I can for future projects. Any advice would be helpful.

You need to set the Visibility Graphics to "Custom" for the Linked Model, and you can then turn on/off elements in the linked model from inside your model.

And DO NOT get in the habit of overusing Detail Components and 2D drafting tools and turning the model off.
This defeats the whole idea of BIM.

good luck!

Agreed. Changing the links to custom will allow you to turn off the components in the link. By the way, you can also utilize this feature if you are using design options in the linked file. For instance, if you could show different shading device options through the link in iterative 3d views for proof of concept meetings, etc. Very useful feature, that.
I also agree that turning everything off and re-drawing it is adding bloat to the BIM process. Think LEAN here folks. Anywhere you can reduce or re-use the model and going to put you ahead on time and money!
