what do you do when you can't save to the central file? when the central and local files are not compatible even when you delete the local file and a new one is saved from central??? how is the backup file made accessible?

Hi Chris

Can I please ask which Autodesk product are you referring to?

I will then move this thread to the most appropriate Forum due to the nature of this Forum -

Below snippet is taken from the small print found on the Forum General (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44) page ( Click HERE (http://forums.augi.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=28398) to see a screen capture )...

Hi Chris

Please note I've *moved* this thread from the New Users (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=47) Forum to this one....

Beth, thanks :)

Revit Moderators, if this isn't the correct Revit Sub-Forum can you please move to the appropriate one.

Thanks, Mike

Chris,

See if this THREAD (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=3963&highlight=save+central) helps.

Chris,

See if this THREAD (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=3963&highlight=save+central) helps.

Bee,

I'm not sure if that thread is the right reference here. An incompatible file is something different. First, I would try shutting down Revit, restarting then attempt the STC again. If it's still incompatible, you may need to create a new local copy of the central and copy/paste new work from the old local into the new local using Paste Aligned.

When using worksets, always remember to Reload Latest Worksets when you begin in the morning and save locally after every STC.

I don't think you want to go back in time, but if necessary, use File-->Workset Backups to restore your Revit project from a previously saved version.

These are the three posts from the linked thread that I thought could assist.

1.
.......................... If it still fails, try checking out all the worksets(views and everything) then add another piece of geometry. then try the STC again. If it still fails its time to send to revit.

2.
If you've got crankyness and you know all your work has been saved to central, ditch your local file, and copy the central file from the server to your hard drive using Windows explorer. Rename and open it -- you'll get a warning about the central file being moved, and that Revit will now assume that this file will be your local file.

Sometimes we see reconciliation problems between central and local files and this is one way to make sure that this is not going to be a problem for you.

3.
I've seen this happen when someone else on the design team started save to central and walked into a meeting. If there was an error, or a prompt to make something editable, it prevents all others from saving to central until it is cleared.

Another option too if there are multiple people who can't save to central because for some reason the central file has become corrupt is to figure who was the last to save to central successfully...

Then use that file to create a new central file on the network with a different name, then change the central file location on each of the other users local file and hopefully they'll still be able to save to central. This method has worked quite a few times for us and reduces the amount of work lost.

Has anyone put a wishlist item to modify the 8.1 version of the STC tool button (which is different than the File -- Save to Central option now) so that the default is to save locally as well? This really should not even be an option; it should just be automatic. When you use the toolbar, I assume the "button is unchecked..."

Most of the time there is no need to save the local file after saving to central -- it will just add time to the operation. Here's the explanation I gave in this thread (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=20427) :

The only time you need to save local immediately after saving to central is if you are about to close the file or exit Revit. If you continue to do work on the file after the STC, then presumably you will save to local later, before you exit, so no need to save now. If you are saving local just to protect yourself from power failure/computer crashing/etc., then there's no need, because the central file itself is a backup of the current state of the file. Doing a local save after STC (when you are planning to continue working on the file in memory) simply makes a long operation take even longer.

By the way, when the STC dialog comes up as part of closing the file (or exiting Revit), the local save button is checked. In this situation you definitely do want to save local after saving to central (otherwise the local file will be invalid).
