Hi All

Im trying to link an architect model so I can carry out my structural work.

When I link It, the elevations and sections don't come through.

The attached picture shows what comes through.

Can someone assist me with this please?

many thanks

Here are some things you can try but i'm afraid that it is not possible to see the sections and elevations of a linked model.
set your plan view discipline to coordination or architectural and set link visibility to "by linked view". Usually by linked view will show annotations but in the case of section cuts and elevation tags they just don't seem to show. If you need to get information from the architect's drawing, i would recommend opening it directly in Revit Structure (you should be able to see all of their section cuts etc that way)

Thanks for that Roger

The wall lines now show up on the plan which is better, and your right the only way of getting the information is by opening the Architects Model in Revit.

I would of thought by linking the model it would make it alot easier when collaborating. Is this still the correct way to collaborate the two models?

cheers

I have to say that I have struggled with trying to work with a model from the arch side. I keep trying to use it like an "underlay" and I halftone it and try to use it to guide my layouts but it can be really frustrating when I feel like what I want to see is a picture of the real arch view under my model. Maybe I'm still too stuck in the "old ways"... Anyone else have thoughts or tips/tricks for working with arch models linked in? I'd love to hear other ideas.

when you cut a section try setting the discipline of the (section)view to arch or coordination. as long as you brought the arch model in at the righ coords(shared, origin to origin, etc) you should see the elements you are looking for. you can "overlay" a section/elevation from an arch model by selecting "by linked view" in sections vv properties. or you can have a 'live section" if its by host.

I've found it tough to use one overall approach since Architects don't develop their models all the same way. One thing I tend to do is to leave MY discipline set to structural, but go into the visibility graphics (VG) options for the linked in model, and set it to Architectural discipline and adjust the detail level there also as necessary. Often I have to turn the linked model off though before final printing, as the structural elements don't always mesh with their model elements very well. It's the same idea as a temp x-ref to work from that is on def-points so it is a useful tool to draw with, but doesn't print (it would be so nice if Revit would incorporate a 'show me, but don't print it' option!).

Overall, major adjustment to the VG properties for the linked in architectural model has brought me the most use in this regard - I override line-weights, colors, visibility, patterns, detail level, which view is seen, discipline, etc etc all from here. View Templates can make the process manageable, although I do still wind up tweaking the templates constantly since the arch models are all a little different with what they show, and how they show it (just like AutoCAD layers), etc, etc.

Been playing with this for a few days now, I think using the VG is the best approach to select what you want to see from the architects model.

cheers for your advice
