View Full Version : 2012 Joining walls will not let me dimension to joined face

When you draw two seperate walls back to back with each other, put a window in one and the opening only goes through the host... Okay I got that part. So I join them so the opening in the window goes through both walls. Now after joining them I can't dimension to the plane or surface where they are "joined" at.
I even tried this in an OOTB Revit template thinking that it might have something to do with my drawing but I got the same result.
Anyone know if there is a way around this besides drawing a detail line at that plane so that I can dimension to it or is it just a Revit bug??
Thanks.

Whoa, serious fail! Hopefully someone has a solution for this, since we are about to do a LOT of enlarged toilet room plans, and our tile is represented by a separate wall, joined to the stud wall. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Hopefully there is a fix...

Agree it's a problem but the fix appears to be pretty simple. Place your dimension before you join geometry or just do a quick unjoin, place your dimension then rejoin. The dimension stays in place.

That workaround is easy enough. Thanks Dimitri. :)
I also noticed that you can't align anything with that "joined" edge either unless you unjoin first. :(

In that vein, I just discovered you can temporarily hide one of the walls if you don't want to unjoin, and get the same results. Thanks!

No need to do either. Just click on the blue dot closest to the tick mark (for the dimension extension line that needs to be moved). It will cycle through all of the faces, including the joined faces (even though the tab cycle doesn't allow you to select that particular face).

Nice work kids:beer:
One question, multiple solutions; each one offering different approaches.
It's amazing how much we discover just by 'playing'
