I set off a Revit rendering set to "best" resolution and left for the day. When I came in the next morning, Windows had logged me off. I logged back in and the rendering was not finished. Apparently, when Windows goes to sleep, the render function goes to sleep with it.

Is there a way to avoid this?

First, we have found that using "best" generally does not produce noticeably better results than "high" or a "custom" setting, and in fact just takes longer and usually produces a crash, even on machines with 12-16 GB of RAM and quad core xeons.

That said, Windows OS has to be "awake" for Revit's rendering function to work.
So--you could change the Windows setting to never go to sleep.

If you have Revit 2012, and are on Subscription--you might try using Cloud Rendering from inside Revit--
puts the rendering up on Adesk's Cloud service and you can continue working in Revit while it renders.
It's very fast and produces very good results, at least in our initial tests.

You might be right about the quality. I'm on 64 bit, but no that much memory. The progress form is at 95% right now, so next time I'll try your advice.

If you are using RAC 2012 and are on subscription, you can use the Cloud Render app. This will allow you to upload the image, render and still continue working withing Revit.

You can sign-in using your Autodesk subscription username and password.

Unfortunately we haven't upgraded yet. Still on 2011. Cloud idea sounds great.

The previous firm I was with hooked up all their old machines into a render farm. Renderings could be offloaded to the "farm"

Cloud Rendering for Revit under Subscription is available only if you have the Building Design Suite Premium or Ultimate. I found out the hard way. My trial use of Cloud Rendering was stopped after the 25th upload or 25 units. The render units can be viewed when you sign into your Autodesk account website - accounts.autodesk.com.
