I'm stymied on how to create a portion of a roof. I've gone through everything I can think of (which isn't that much) and can't get it to behave. I'm enclosing a portion of the roof plan & an elevation. This particular model is a presentation model based on CAD drawings (we don't have everyone on Revit yet.)

The roof at the chimney does need to go up a little from where it is shown in elevation but even with that I'm still stuck.

Thanks

Hi
Did you try roof-by-extrusion for your big dormer, (then join to main roof) then cutting around the chimney with the Openings command? (vertical or even "by face")?

I was able to make a gable roof using the regular tools but it doesn't join to the big roof. The other issue is the connection at the corner of the big roof to the dormer. I haven't managed to get that to clean up either. I'll try an extrusion in a bit.

Thanks.

Good luck... I found (after hours) that if my own similar gable roof (when made by extrusion at least) will not join the main roof, it can help to stretch (before executing the join command) the "joining" end of the gable roof actually beyond the central ridge and sometimes even beyond the far side of the main roof. No idea why this works. It was a very helpful suggestion from a fellow AUGI user two days ago. I noticed if you stretch the gable roof all the way beyond the far side of the main roof, you can pick the far end of the gable roof (because you can see it, it comes out from under the big roof) during the join command. This seems to help Revit understand. I spend lots of time on this, with some help. I hope this helps.... Good luck!

It looks like the roof plan and elevation are not coordinated. The roof plan shows the edge of the roof beyond the face of the chimney wall, but the elevation shows now roof in front of the chimney. In any case, my approach would be to edit the profile of the chimney wall to form the chimney and use the vertical and opening cut tools to cut out the unwanted portions of the roof.

The CAD elevation & plan are not coordinated and I pointed that out while making the model. There were several other areas with similar issues...

I finally did get it to work after an hour or two of tinkering. I created the dormer roof by actually tracing the dormer lines creating a 5-sided figure and applying slope to two sides rather than a simple roof and joining which wasn't working. After some tinkering to get the elevation heights correct I created a void in the main roof and chamfered the back corners to avoid an odd cut. The chimney was edited in profile - although for some reason the wall didn't want to stick to the roof line even after aligning it. In this case the trim covers the modeling issue and since this is only for presentation I'm not worrying right now about it.

There are a few small issues still but for the time being they aren't something I'm worried about since the views will be of the entire building (350' long) and not of the chimney area itself.

A tertiary question however - I can't seem to pick the opening I placed in the main roof no matter how much I tab through my edges. Is there any reason for this? I can pick the cut in the dormer roof and everything else in the general area - just not the main roof cut.

Thanks for the help. :beer::beer:
