compound curve

I have used an extrusion as a top railing, curved in plan. I would like to make it curve in elevation also. That is, how do I make an extrusion along a compound curved path? Perhaps I have to use a sweep?

Sweeps need a host plane, so that wouldn't work for you. The only place you can create a compound curve in Revit that I know of is in a conceptual mass.

In the conceptual mass editor, create a 3D spline with points. At each point host the profile. Select all the profiles, then create mass.
