View Full Version : Error in Survey Database? Metic Imperial Issue

I have a metric landxml file (I'm in Canada and work in metric) and have several issues:

1. Looking at the database under the survey tab, the Northing and Easting appears to be proper for metric yet the elevation is converted to imperial (0.3048).

2. When inserting the survey database into a drawing it "converts" the coordinates by 0.3048. It appears that somewhere along the line it thinks the coordinates are imperial and then converts them to metric.

3. Conversely, you load points straight into a drawing (from landxml or a point file) and put them into the survey database and it will convert by 0.3048.

We are using the C3D 2012 Metric install for drawings and confirm that units are metric for the drawings.

I'm not sure how else to explain this.

1. Create your survey database.

2. Prior to importing data (landxml) go to Survey - Edit Survey Database Settings.

3. Default (even though this is a metric install) shows as "Imperial Feet" (fahrenheit/inches Hg). Change this to meters (celcius/mm Hg).

4. Now import your data into the survey database. This will keep metric as metric in the database itself and metric as metric when you import the points into a drawing.

Note: This has to be set for each and every database you create. I'm unsure why this doesn't become the default setting for Survey Databases for C3D.

1.

Actually the solution is one of the least covered areas of Survey.
This is a process I cover in my classes.

The First thing one does is establish the DEFAULT Survey Database settings one want to use.
(One can also set up properly named ALTERNATES)

Then you Export the settings (See Image 01)

Then you set that exported file as the default (See Image 02)

Then your Survey Database setting remain SET as the Default such as you desire.

Yup . . . I figured out setting it as the default about 1/2 hr after I posted.

As to "Why?" the metric version has this in international feet is still a mystery to me.

And "Why"" is this hidden in the Survey drop down menu and not through any other avenue.

Now if I can just get civil to understand point groups through a landxml export from Land I'd be in great shape.
