We've been using Civil 3D for about eight months now. We've found that working with the survey database in large projects is cumbersome, to say the least. As an example, a 10.5 mile topo of county highway right-of-way contains 25,000 points and hundreds of survey figures. The survey database takes about 20 minutes to open and editing is also slow. Are there settings that might be changed to speed things up? I've heard it suggested that the database could be placed on the local hard drive to speed things up. Did Autodesk not realize their clients used servers? Running Windows 7, 64-bit on a Dell Precision T5500 with Intel Xeon Quad Core E5507 2.27GHz processor and 12 GB RAM.

this would suggest two things

first try moving the data local to see if there is noticable improvents

the bottleneck could be network traffic, or server performance

should placing the database local provide any relief to this symptom it would be a good idea to run some performance monitoring and optimization on the server like more ram and or faster hard drives or both.

also go to the product feedback page at autodesk and let them know about the issue, perhpas even open a support request through your dealer
