I have changed a material to a new color, apply and save but never saves the information.

Here is what I do;

I select the material from the Autodesk library and assign to In scene material. Then I duplicate the material and rename to new material that I want. I change the color, image etc. then Apply the changes to the new material. I even save it to My Material Library for later use. I exit out of material editor and if I render it does just fine.

Here is my problem. If I go back to material editor and click on the material it default back to the original material. The material before I edited it. How can I use this material for later projects if it doesn't remember any changes. The image doesn't update either. It stays the same image as the original default view.

I don't get it. I have tried many different things to get this to work and save what changes I have done.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Yman

This one has me stumped. Any ideas anyone?

Try duplicating an existing material first and create the material name before modifying the maps for that material.

I did that already and it didn't work. I know this worked in 2011, but doesn't seem to work in 2012. At least it remembers the setting of what changes you did. Just don't click on the material you edited or it defaults back to original material properties.

I figured it out. So this is an FYI to anyone who doesn't know and never knew I had to do it this way before.

If you edit your material in the material editor using the Material command on the Manage tab then it will only save the edited material information and never update the picture in the Appearance Property Sets tab, but will update it on the Appearance tab on the right. This is all fine and apply the changes to the material and it is updated, but if you want to duplicate the material or if you select it at all in the Appearance Property Sets tab it will default back to the original material and you lose all your edited information.

If you want to create your own materials and save them as new materials and remember the new image and properties of the material then you have to use the Property Set Libraries command under the Manage<Additional Settings. I never new this until I started creating a bunch of custom materials that were very similar.

So there you go if you need this info.
