View Full Version : How do you take home the multiply linked central file and be able to work on it?

Hi guys!
I am just wondering if there is a way to work on the central files at home by taking the saved local copies, I havn't tried it, but I can almost envision how problematic it might be. The files are all multiply linked (and each one is a central file). I was thinking to open them up at home and " saved as central " to the home computer, then work on it, then later saved back to work server with the same procedure. The problem I can see is that it might become very messay, as there are about 10 plus DWG linked to each central file, which interm is linked to another "central file" itself.
I might be in deep doo doo for doing that. sigh....
Suggestion to Revit team... PLEASE PLEASE make Future Revit files friendly to take home to work on.... we dont' want to stay at office till next day to finish off some project.. :)

just save a local copy as you would with any workset file. Take it home, work on it, then get back to the office and 'save to central' to incorporate the changes.

so you have RVT files linked? or just DWG files? Each linked file is also its own workset? I'm still not understanding your problem???

Yes, it's quite a large development.
Each Revit files have it's own workset, and it's linked to ANOTHER Revit central file.
And each Revit file itself have tonnes of linked DWG files. :(

Map a drive to your local machine with the same drive letter as your office machine. Place the linked DWG's in a dir with the same path. Of course if you change any of the DWG's - be sure to put the new copies on the server when you're back in the office.

yes, this is a cumbersome situation. Note that for .rvt links, there is a notion of a "local alias" which allows to point a local host file to another local link file. There isn't such notion for .DWG files. We'll take this under advisement.
