According to the context menu in the project browser, and according to the documentation for RAC 2010 I should be able to reload groups from external files.

But I can't. Does this feature work for anyone? It would sure solve some of these problems coordinating legends between projects...

Groups are now just RVT files so yes you can reload them. you should get a notice when reloading asking if you want to overright the existing group.

Hi sbrown - I still have never seen the box any color other than grey. So I can't see how to use it. Are there some special circumstances where it won't work that I need to know about?

Read the help on links and groups. Basically, you can create a group, then select it, turn it into a link, save it out of your model. Then open it separately, do whatever you want to it and reload the link, the link if bound is a group.

I've now read the manual about groups ( I had before ) but there it mentions that groups can be saved as RVG files. I haven't found any way to do that - it's just never an option when I try to save a file or a group from the project browser... is that why I'm having problems - does the whole reloading thing only work on RVG files?

I did a little snooping and found an AECBytes article from June 26, 2007 that references RVG ffiles for groups (http://www.aecbytes.com/review/2007/RevitArch2008.html). Basically it states that RVG files are no longer used as of the 2008 version but if you already have some RVG files you can still load them into a project. The current process within Revit is saving a group to RVT and either importing it back in as a linked file or loading it as a group.

Hope this helps clarify a little bit.

There is NO RVG anymore, that was a long time ago.

Just try it, make a group, select it, click the link button, save, then open the file it created, edit. and reload.

Duncan,
The reload group process is dependent on the group being originally created in the file, then exported out as a link, then reloading the link AS a group (basically round-tripping the conversion process). It sounds like you're attempting to create a 2D group from a legend, and pass that on to other projects it is new to. I do not know that to be possible.

I wonder if the 'lock down' on transferring legends is due to legend components needing to 'read' their graphics from the loaded families they represent, which may not be available in the receiving project. So legends are verbotten to transfer, (even if the legend does not contain any of those legend components).

You got it Nancy! That was my problem - I worked out eventually. But does this mean that you can't load a group exported from one project into another and have it reloadable?

I have done this successfully on a 2010 project last year. But.... I can't seem to re-create this in 2013?
