View Full Version : Printing a "window"

OK so i know the first answer I'll get is stop trying to use Revit like AutoCAD - but one thing that has stumped me is printing out parts of the plan to check or work over - you know during design phase sometimes its easier just to print the basic outline of something at a large scale (1:50) or something and work over the top with pencil and tracing. i went to do this the other day and got stumped - i couldn't find a "pick window" type of option for printing. There must be more ways than to set up a sheet and print from that? isn't there.
for detailing - I'll quite often print the part of the plan at say 1:10 or 1:5 then mark it up for the drafter to detail - now this will still apply to Revit especially sections etc - set up generically at development stage then as Cd's come along more detailed - like structural input etc
so bring on the how To's

Try the "print visible portion of current window"
in the "print range" section of the print dlg
In the setting tab you can set the zoom parameter for printing at different scale.

Just use a callout view. Create the view to the correct scale, double click to open it, PLOT, CURRENT VIEW. Couldn't be quicker. This is what I do when I need a cropped portion of a drawing or a quick plot that is of a specific area at a specific scale without placing it on a sheet.
One thing to remember when using the Print Visible Portion of Current Window is that the window you are printing from can't be maximized. It must be reduced and zoomed to the portion you want to print. Don't know why, it's just so :???:

Printing in Revit - my single largest nightmare. Surely this can be improved upon ... please, please ... doing something with it.

RegardsWhat exactly does this mean? Could you fix a problem described this way? Criticism is fine, it's just more helpful if it actually clarifies what is wrong (if anything). I'd like Revit to print faster for example, which I do wish for.

printing in Revit had is "trap's" but... after a little use i no longer know how to print in Autocad
perhaps i forget AutoCAD to quickly....but i had no regret at all

Have you all had a look at Tips and Tricks?
Check out this thread:
How To: Print an area of a drawing by "Window" (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=8635)

Nobody looks at that section of the Forum do they Scott? ;-)
Good point though. That's one section we should all browse once in a while even if nothing new is posted there. Just to plant that seed in our memories for future reference.

I hope people are looking at Tips and Tricks! I also hope that people are performing a search here at AUGI before posting questions. We have amassed a wealth of knowledge here, and I'm beginning to see the same questions time and time again. We are trying to create avenues to organize this information and make it easy to find, such as Tips & Tricks, and the newly created FAQ forum.
Please be sure to do some research in these areas, or do an overall keyword search of all the Revit forums, before you post a new question....chances are pretty good it's been answered before!
I know we have such a great group of people here, that it's really easy to post a question and within minutes, get a response. I'm guilty myself of the 'quick post' without a search.....

Steve:
Don't mean to be rude - but I thought the problem was self evident. Plot by window Autocad style - is my idea of simple. Why should I have to tie my shoe laces left handed if I am right handed? Sure create another sheet (size as required i.e. tabloaid) drag view to sheet at scale required ... the Autocad method to me IMHO seems more intuative and less troublesome. I think both programs Revit and Autocad should compliment one another not diverge.

I think plot by window is hard. Have since r2 of AutoCAD - and have been ranting about it since.

No need to apologize! We've all done it!
And I hope my message didn't come across wrong, I was just reminding people that the information you are looking for may already be here. Maybe we should consider adding some "links" for common searches, to make the info even easier to find.
Thanks!

Just wanted to remind those Autocad users out there that you won't find any SCALE settings in Revit printing. Remember, every Revit view has a scale already assigned to it which can be used with zoom percentages when printing. For example, if you have a floor plan set to 1:100 and you want to print it at 1:50, set the print zoom to 200%. If you want to print it at 1:200, set the zoom to 50%.
Took me awhile to figure that one out. I would always create a callout and dump on a blank sheet!
