When does a Hatch does NOT have area.

I have a hatch, which when I select in Area command responds with 'Selected object does not have an area'.

I have other hatches with same pattern that do not show this behavior.

What could be the possible reason for this?

Could you post a sample drawing with the offending hatch? Most probably its borders are too complex for acad to calculate its area. This usually happens when there are gaps in the borders or overlapping border lines - quite easy to achieve when you create hatches using the pick-point method (I prefer hatching using Select Objects instead, one of the reasons is this one).

I have found that a hatch will not have an area if the boundary crosses itself. I have always had better luck if I use "Pick points" to define the hatch. Although just last week I had a hatch that I defined by picking points that did not have an area. That would be the first time I have seen that.
