Revit Sheet Naming

Hi,

My company is based in the UK and looking to establish a new naming convention within our office for sheets within Revit. The national BIM standards (US) seem quite applicable and easy to implement however I would prefer to stick with a UK based convention like BS1192 or AEC UK Standards for collaborative workings etc, however neither are the best.

BS1192

[Project]-[Originator]-[Zone]-[Level]-[File Type]-[Discipline]-[Number] i.e. 2153-AEW-01-03-DR-A-0001


AEC Standards UK

[Project]-[Discipline]-[Zone]-[View]-[Level]-[Content]-[Number] i.e. 2153-A-01-P-03-G42-0001

I am wondering how others are dealing with this, and organising the sheets in Revit.

Kevin,

Is this your sheet name or sheet number? Sheet numbers can not repeat. Where as sheet names can. I would say stick to a standard, instead of re-inventing the wheel. It will make it easier on everyone involved (current & future employees).

That's where the NCS falls apart. If you do any gov work, it depends on which sector of the gov you're working for. They each have their own NCS standards. Makes all kinds of sense to me.

Thanks all for your input. Sorry for the slow reply, the forum didn't inform me of any responses.

Jeff this would be the sheet number (or at least the one that appears on the sheet), the name would perhaps be descriptive. As we issue PDF and DWF I would need a number format that existing completely in the number parameter so that when I print it appears as the file name. I would need some kind of identifier to control the [number] code so that it was not repeated.

It all seems a little messy, unfortunately it seems Revit just isn't designed for this complex type of number systems.

ideally I would like a way or organising the sheets too in the browser if the sheet numbers were

A-01-P-03-0001
A-01-S-04-0002
A-02-E-01-0003

Organising would be difficult. I would welcome any suggestions.

Unfortunately Jeff BS1192 is a recognised standard but I can't get Revit to play nice with it! I have seen Xrev that looks extremely useful but it's yet another software to purchase.

That's about as complicated as it gets for us. :)

I was with SOM almost 25 years. Big as they might be, we usually used the same simple system as Patrick does.

A-101
S-101
M-101
E-101
P-101
etc

Keep in mind, sheet names have nothing to do with the file name, since Revit has only one file.

We use separate volumes when it comes to sorting our sheets. Most of the project we do generate several inches of paper, so breaking up sheet sets into volumes is pretty easy.
