Having a hard time creating picket style railings; where the intermediate posts are a different diameter than the pickets, all within the same railing system (I find the baluster settings don't allow me to do what I want). I have been just creating another railing system in the same place, that is just the posts, it is double the effort and harder to edit. Is there a better way?

So long as there is a pattern, it can be done in the same railing.

Posts at 4'-0" OC and the pickets 4" OC, simple enough, but it only seems to work on one side of the post

You need to configure that pattern in the Edit Baluster Placement dialog box.

You need to configure that pattern in the Edit Baluster Placement dialog box.

I did, but it only seems to work on one side of the post, not sure what i am missing?

Can you post a screen capture that shows how you configured the pattern?

Yes, there is a trick. Make a type with the post at the end, then divide your sketch line up. At each division there will be a post.

That would require to do that division of segments every time you need a railing like that in a project, and add an additional post at the end as a separate family. It would be better to configure the pattern in the dialog box.

The post on the end is done with another rail type, not a family. The reason I do it this way is so I have full control of where every post falls. I do lots of additions and remodels, and often the real world does not have the posts laid out in exact intervals.

Yes, it can be useful for short railings, and especially useful for locating posts at specific locations, as you say. However, not practical for modeling railings in long runs. It is nice to have two alternatives, though. The divided segments and the pattern, depending on the situation.
