I know this is simple but the answer eludes me, I need some help.
I want the bracket to move up and down the length of the post and move in and out with the post length. Will someone point me in the correct direction.
Thank you,
Bracket challenged

Here's your bracket.
Added reference lines & planes to make it work. Open the file & take a look. I set the bracket up with a horizontal (span) distance parmeter at the top, & a beam angle (from horizontal) parameter.
You might want horiz span & vertical span. If that's the case, you can delete the angle parameter, add a reference plane below the top plane, add a dimenision & vert. param to it, & constrain the other lower end of the reference line to it & the offset from column reference plane.
Changed all the parameters to instance parameters, and added a material param (beam) for the solid.

Andrew,
Where did I go wrong, was it the lack of the angle? I had the span in different versions however the bottom would always stay fixed when I changed the height. My intent then was to make the bracket move as a whole.
Thanks for the help, I really didn't want to make a bunch of in place families for this project.

Mostly overconstrained on the solid geometry.
You really want to construct as much of the model as possible with reference planes & reference lines, & flex all the parameters as you go along. Then, when adding solids & voids, lock their sketch lines to these planes. It really helps in finding & correcting constraint problems.
The more you do, the easier it gets, as far a understanding how constraints are set as you add geometry.
Once you get there, hopefully your forehead won't be as flat as mine from this:banghead:.
