View Full Version : 2012 Tagging a nested Detail Component

I can't seem to tag a nested detail component inside another detail component! (Is is set to be 'Shared'). I've read about making tags for the host family which can grab info from the nested object (http://www.revitforum.org/architecture-family-creation/6031-nested-detail-component-tag.html), but that's not what I want.

We're trying to make Details Components which contain a basically complete detail which can just be placed on the 3D geometry and annotated (suggestions for other solutions welcome).

So, can I tag a nested detail component?

PS. I have no trouble tagging a nested regular (3d) family.

Where is the detail component being nested? What exactly are you trying to do? A model family with a detail component?

Duncan,

Did you try making the detail component a shared family prior to nesting it into your host family? This is a check box in the main properties of the family, the same location as Omni-Classification.

I've edited my original post to clarify. This is a detail component (set to 'shared') nested inside another detail component. It is the nested one which I cannot tab in to, tag, or even find in the Project Browser as an object inside the host detail component.

I made a quick test, and I did not find any problems. In this image, detail family "A" contains a circle. This family is set to shared. Then, it is inserted into detail family "B" which contains a square. Then, family "B" is inserted into a project, where both components can be tagged independently, using the tab key. Maybe your workflow is different.

Back to Alfredo's question. What are you loading this detail component into? Are you trying to load a curtain wall mullion detail component into the mullion profile?
Some additional questions for you.
Do you have a tag loaded for the detail component category?
Did you properly sequence your loading/reloading of family-to-family-to-project, so that the shared nested component would make it into the project?

I don't know what else to add at this point.
Sorry,
Jeff S.

Sorry I didn't get back to this earlier. I've got it working and don't know why it didn't work. Someone _else_ was doing it and got some help and still couldn't make it work. So I assumed there was a problem.

First this evening have I actually had time to test it myself and it works as expected... a lesson for me in there I think

Thanks for your help!

Here's my sandbox file in Revit 2011 format 85944

So, I was trying to nest a shared Detail Item into a Curtain Wall Profile Family today. Everything was going "well" until I cut a section of my curtain wall, only see that my shared, nested detail item doesn't show up anymore. I checked the visiblity settings in both the detail family & the profile family and nothing seems wrong. Is this another issue with curtain wall mullions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jeff S.

EDIT: Correction: Jeff is correct. The detail component in the mullion will not show in the project if the detail family is set to shared.

Not sure if this is relevant, but remember that not all Categories can be cut. See Non-Cuttable Families (http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/2012/Help/Revit_User%27s_Guide/2921-Customiz2921/2931-Project_2931/3076-Detail_L3076/3079-Managing3079/3082-Non-Cutt3082)

You didn't quite say if your profile is for a Panel or a Mullion.

I had our reseller watch my screen as I did my steps. After changing the detail component to "Shared", nesting it into the profile family, then reloading it into the project, the detail component disappears from my section. You can try it on your own. The reason I want this detail item as shared, is because it takes two or three steps to get it into the mullion, if it's not shared. If it is, I could go directly to the detail items list in my project browser and open the family.

Would you mind attaching the file? I've only got access to RAC 2011 / 12

Well, I made a test, and some research, and I take back what I wrote in my previous post. It does not work, and it has been that way for years. Nested detail components in mullions don't show in the project if the detail families are shared.

Well I heard back from my reseller/support team, and they suggest letting AutoDesk know about this via their feedback page (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794). I suggest we all let them know this is a sever limitation to Revit.

Cheers,
Jeff S.

Below is what my feedback to AD is on this issue, plus another.

'I have started working more intensely with curtain walls and their associated families. I am discouraged by the lack of continuity with other family types. My two complaints would be the lack of ability to have multi loop profiles for curtain wall mullions, and how Nested, Shared Detail Items disappear from the mullion profile when cut in section. Below are two threads from AUGI that discuss these issues.

I've started adding references to such limitations and bugs to Autodesk's help wiki. That way the issue is very visable and others don't spend so much time looking for a solution. Here's the site, just find the page for mullions for the RAC version you're running. http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/2012
