Hi
I am new to Civil 3D and the query I have is are there any possibilities of externally referenced surface files and point files onto a parent file ? There was a requirement by a client like they need to keep the point files, surface files externally referenced to the main file so as to maintain a parent child relationship between these files. Please help me out on this.
Thank You

Hello Joseph,
In short, yes, you can use the two files as Xrefs and you can also create data shortcuts if you are wanting to have the object data 'available' within the other drawings. It mainly depends on what you will be using the external data for.

Thank You Mark for the quick reply
Also regarding Xreffing drawings, can we have only surfaces and parcels as xrefs?
Thank You

No, when using XREFS, everything that is shown in the XREF drawing will also show in the new file. The difference between using an "Overlay" or "Attached" xref is the overlay will NOT follow through to the next drawing where an Attached xref will.
As an example:
DWG A is xreffed into drawing B as an Overlay, then Drawing B is Overlaid or Attached into Drawing C. When you open Drawing C, you will only see the objects from Drawing B.
If you Attach DWG A to Drawing B, and then overlay or attach DWG B to DWG C, you will see everything from DWG B AND everything from DWG A.

Okay Mark
Thank You so much. I got the point.
Externally referenced sample drawings as an example.
