View Full Version : Any way to get topo cut/fill data after the fact?

I have a project with existing and new topo surfaces that were not made in the usual way of doing a Graded Region, which reports cut and fill data. Is there any way to get that data after-the-fact? I thought maybe I could do separate existing and new toposurfaces off to the side, but you can't copy/paste topo points. That would make it easy.

Any ideas?

Haven't tested it and not certain how complex your topos are but what about exporting one of the surfaces out as a 3D dwg and bringing it back into revit and using it as an underlay to recreate your surface. I'd pick the one that would involve the least amount of rework since, as you said, you can't copy/paste points.

Problem is there are LOTS of points that don't fall on contour lines, but are rather used to "force" the contour lines to behave. So no I couldn't do it by simply tracing points on contour lines, unfortunately. And it's also fairly complicated with lots of drainage swales (always a MAJOR pain with Revit topography), retaining walls, etc.

If you export a site to .dwg and import it back in Revit, you can recreate again in Revit by using Create from import > Select Import instance, not by tracing points. Then change the phase, etc.

Have used that process many times (create topo from CAD link), and all it does is place points at the corresponding vertices of the contour lines. And when you have things like drainage swales (contour line makes a V-shape pointing up-slope), there are always points that must be added to make Revit's contour lines work correctly and stay true to the desired contour lines. Otherwise you have contour lines "shortcutting" and connecting nearby points of the same elevation, instead of taking a longer path around where it's supposed to go.

*edit I just exported a topo out to CAD and then linked it back in, and the resulting CAD file is FLAT!!! The contour lines exported from my toposurface have no elevation to them at all! Is this normal?

Anyone is welcome to try this file to see what you get, CAD-wise.

It is normal if you export the Site plan view. You need to export the site from a 3d view.
