How do I use the view range for a floor plan to show certain things? I have changed this and that and cant seem to make it work. I dont see any changes to my floor plans using this. What is the trick?

Probabaly could use some more information.
-What is your curret view range set at?
-What "things" are you trying to show in plan?
There are a lot of threads that discuss view range and how it works.
Maybe some screen shots would help also.
Take a look at this PDF I found a long time ago on the forums that helps explain view range.

I have an older copy, but if they still have the same chapter on Views (chapter 3 in the 2008 version) in Introducing Revit Architecture (http://www.amazon.com/Introducing-Autodesk-Architecture-Official-Training/dp/1118029968)
had the best description of View Ranges I've even seen.
It showed a small room with a Mezzanine and some Furniture and what was displayed using different View Range settings
(Steve? is that still in the latest?)

Also, check out the links on this blog post. The pdf handout is especially helpful. http://therevitkid.blogspot.com/2011/07/revit-tip-floor-plan-and-ceiling-plan.html

Here are a few tricks: The cut plane should be at 4'-0" typically. A family that the cut plane does not contact will not show, so you have to put an <invisible line> in the family to get the family to hit the cut plane, that's why that line-type is in all family templates. You can use 'plan regions' for an area to have different cut planes, good for upper windows.
