what would cause my dimensions to add up incorrectly. Notice in the attachment the continued dimensions- 14' 2", 13' 10", and 10' 0" should add up to 38' 0" total but it's not.

you should check to see what precision your dimensions are set to. This is available under the dimension's type properties. More then likely it's set to the project's default, which might only be 1/4".

Round-offs can have a huge effect on dimensioning. When teaching, I like to show a little sum in Excel to demonstate that what you see displayed is not the actual number inside the computer, but a rounded version of it. In the example above, the sum on the right is actually (1.4 + 1.4 = 2.8 ), but I rounded it to whole numbers and got (1 + 1 = 3)!

Our office standard is to keep dimension precision at 1/256". That way anything not dimensioned to exact inch increments readily shows up. If there's something that would actually be a fractional number such as a diagonal dimension, I'll either use a separate dimension style set to lower precision, or just change the value to text with +/- and the rounded dimension value.
