I have a Borrowed Light family which is actually in the door category because I need to schedule it in a room. We often have borrowed lights which are up high but I want to still be able to see the borrowed light with the wall being cut in plan regardless of the View Range. I've tried everything with masking regions but I can't get it to work. There's some added complexity with this since I've added a couple frames, one for an automatic width that will be the entire width of the wall it's going into and another frame extrusion so the user can select a fixed frame width regardless of the wall thickness.

Perhaps use a Plan Region? Except if you have hundreds of these, that might be a problem!
How high is the borrowed light? Perhaps a view with an Underlay set to Reflected Ceiling might work?

Try adding an invisible line in the family that extends down to the ref level in the family. Revit sees this line as part of the family and 'cuts' the family instance. You can then turn off the geometry of the actual family from plan views but create symbolic lines That show the window how you want it in the plan (probably dashed lines or similar).
