Add a customer to Materials

How can I add a custom shared parameter to my Materials? When I search with google I just get lots of hits for creating a parameter in a family which controls the material - that's not what I want.

Just to prove that is can be done here's a screenshot:

You need to add a Material Parameter. I had asked a similar question awhile back, I'll try to find that post to give you a hyperlink.

I can see that what I had missed was that Materials can only have Instance Parameters, once I accepted that everything worked as expected.

For the short test I did, it worked well. We haven't done anything with it in our template as of yet.

Because I'm working on a 340,000 m2 hospital campus project I'm adding a Version to everything I can get hold of so we can manage updating components in all these models which were set up in a time when the project template was not ideally prepared.
