Is there a way to unshare coodinates between revit files? I am working with consultants outside of our network, so sharing coordinates back and forth...well, I don't think it was a good starting point. Live and Learn.

I had previously shared coordinates between our MEP and ARCH files and got everything into position... which is great. BUT...the site has 3 buildings on it and the MEP engineer just copied the file that was set up with shared coordinates for the other buildings and didn't change the project base point and the three buildings have different finish floors.

I thought if we just went back to origin to origin for how we insert the project files into one another (how we should have done it in the first place), I could have the engineers put in the info for the project base point and all would be well. However, when we insert origin to origin, the linked file is not in the correct position. (Project base point is identical in both files)

I have a feeling it has something to do with the files having the shared coordinates? Any advice? Keep using shared coordinates for this one file?

So confused.

I haven't read through all of these, but my guess is that one of them will address your issue.

Is there a way to unshare coodinates between revit files?

Old post, but for the sake of answering this question...yes there is, but it is not a single click operation!

Say you have a host project "A" with two linked models "B" & "C". They all share the coordinate system amongst each other (let's assume they acquired from "A"). If "B" & "C" are positioned by Shared Coordinates, if you move the Shared Coordinate origin, the linked models move around as well. To break this relationship, pick each model and move it by some known distance in a reasonable direction (ex: North). Revit warns you that shared coordinates need to be saved back to this model. Just click ok to dismiss (postpone) the warning and do the same with any other models. Now save the host project and a dialog will be displayed for each link asking you whether to a) save back these positions, whether to b) not save (if you do this, models will move back to their previously saved position when the host model is closed and re-opened) or if you want to c) disable shared positioning. The last option is the one you want to pick.

Once you have finished with the above, models won't be located based on shared coordinates any more. Don't forget to move the linked model/s back in the opposite direction to restore their original location...do you see why I recommended moving the links by a "known distance in a reasonable direction"? ;)

What David describes will undo the sharing or ongoing sharing between files but Revit does not forget the relationship until you give it or them a different relationship to pay more attention to. My post called Reset Shared Coordinates (http://revitoped.blogspot.com/2012/04/reset-shared-coordinates.html) explains it.

Steve, thanks for your response. I was doing something wrong yesterday (can't figure out what) so I came to the wrong conclusion  What you describe is correct: you have to acquire from something else in order to break the bond (there has to be a bond once one is created...then you can remove the linked file you acquired from but Revit still remembers that shared coordinates between them were reconciled with that file if you re-link it again and have not acquired from some other file in the meantime. What an elephant!)

The take-away for me is that by "reconciled", Revit is talking about the bond between the shared coordinates of the link and the host project. It is not talking about the actual position of the coordinate system, but whatever ID (DNA?) it is writing to make sure it recognizes that bond between the two.

One other thing I just learned is that if you create a new instance of a link that shares coordinates with the host file and you try to assign the same location, Revit won't let you and will report that it is already in use. The OK button gets greyed out in fact.

Also all the elaborate explanation I gave above is actually unnecessary: The easiest way is to pick the link, go to the Shared Site button and disable shared positioning from there.
