I'm doing travel distance calculations. I'm using detail lines on a special sheet that will not become part of the set. If I click on a single line, properties will give me the length, but if I switch to chain of lines, properties recognizes the chain consists of three lines but blanks out the length.

Is there a way to calculate the length of the chain? If not, sounds like a wishlist item.

I'm sure there is a elegant parametric way of doing this, but I opt for chain measure, then text with an arrow pointing in the direction of egress. Simple.

I created a Generic Line-Based Arrow for one of our architects that would total the travel distance in a Schedule. (See attached .rvt sample file. Revit 2013) The Travel Path ID and Travel Distance parameters are Shared Parameters.

The family can be recreated in Revit 2012, but I only have it in 2013. Let me know if you'd like to see it in 2012.

I had forgotten about measure along an element. When I checked help, I found this:

[URL="http://http://wikihelp.autodesk.com/Revit/enu/Community/Tips_and_Tricks/Project_Documentation/Measure_Chained_Detail_Lines"]

It involves converting detail lines to model, measure the chain of lines, then convert them back.

I made a video some time ago, that shows how to schedule those lengths. This is the link to that post:

There is a LOT of information about this subject, gathered from years ago, in Steve Stafford's blog, starting from here: http://revitoped.blogspot.com/2012/08/egress-post-summary.html

There is a page about this at the wikihelp. has a video showing the process and some sample families you can use if you like.

You could go with the railing solution: there's a great (free) plugin by the people at CASE Inc. that works really well for this.

Several years ago, someone posted a really nice generic family that does travel distance, for an indefinite number of legs. Only problem is in going down stairs. But you might search for it; it was posted to this forum. I use it on all my projects now.

Only problem is in going down stairs.

Something unusual about this project: there are no stairs in this building. It's a single story school, slab on grade. Even the mechanical is in a small shed out back.
