i have a home that is nestled into a hill. i have the toposurface all set up. i have added building pads to remove the earth from inside the home but it also clears the earth from the roof where the earth will remain. any suggestions on how i can add the earth on top of the building?

My gut reaction would be to come back in with a phased topo (never tried this) or a roof/mass to match grade. I think it would depend on what you're trying show, render versus construction.

I'd go with a roof/mass. If you go with the roof, you can use the Modify Sub Elements to manipulate the heights locally if it isn't flat. An in-place mass might give you a little more control (or be more finicky).
Honestly, because I dislike the topo tools in Revit so much, I'd probably use SketchUp or Rhino to create the mass I want on top of the building, then import it into an in-place mass/family and call it a day.
