I have a problem where steel beams are displaying as hidden detail in a plan view where there is nothing hiding them! The floor which sits on top of the beams is hidden in the plan view yet the beams still display hidden.
I have tried to use the lineweights tool to make them solid but this selects the entire beam and not individual lines - in some areas I need some of the beam to display dotted where it extends under a precast hollowcore slab, so i need the line to transition form solid to hidden where it goes under a hollowcore unit.
I have attached an image which explains this more clearly than I can describe.
What is even more confusing is that the trusses are displaying correctly and they are normally the bane of my life!:?

Looks like your view direction is set to Up and not Down. In properties for the Structural Plan Template - click edit type - is this set to up? If so change to down

You've set your hidden linetype to a dash-dot style? I'm trying to figure out if it's really showing them hidden line or if the beam linestyle has been overridden.
1. try changing view discipline from structural to arch or coor and see if they change (this controls whether the hidden line algorithm is used in the drawing)
2. create a new view of this plan, see if they are the same (is there a filter, or linestyle override applied to this view) [what happens if you draw a beam outside of the floor area, just as a test?]
3. what detail level is set in the view?
4. if you delete the slabs, do they draw as solid lines?

Ken, thanks for your response.
Hmm I hadn't noticed that...no, my hidden line should be dashed. That makes me think you may be right about the linestyle.
Ok so results from your suggested tests:
1. No change
2. Lines show correctly in a new view - New beam outside floor area in curent view displays correctly.
3. View is set to fine detail level
4. Deleting the slabs doesn't change the appearance of the beams.
I think from this we have ascertained that the problem is being caused by an override. I just cant find out how. I have checked my object styles and that seems ok, I have checked the visibility/graphics overrides and there are no overrides in there.
Any other ideas?

have there been any Filters applied to your view?

OK... How about, have they been "Overridden in View?" Select the element, right-click, "Override Graphics in View" > By Element ... check to make sure everything is set <By Object Style> by clicking [Reset] at the bottom left (if the Reset button is greyed out, then everything is already set at <By Object Style.>
Or maybe the linework has been Overridden by using the Linework Tool. Go to your Modify Tab > View Panel > Linework Tool (or just type LW) > choose <By Category> and then click on the offending beams.

Next likely candidate is phasing override. Are you using phases?

I think ive found out what it was. In the past the beams in this view were shown as stick symbols; I used the linework tool to make those stick symbols appear as centrelines. Then they change their mind and want to see the true thickness of the beams - so I switch the detail level to fine and the beams are still shown as centrelines. I thought I had just changed the lineweight for the stick symbol but apparently not!
Now I think I have to go over the whole floor using the lineweight tool and set all of the beams to <By Category> Yey, that sounds like fun!
Thanks for all of your help guys and I hope I didnt waste too much of your time.

Yay! I'm glad you figured it out.
Don't forget, you can isolate your category to make it easier to see just the beams. I'd probably also HH (temporary Hide) items as I cleaned them up just so I can see my progress, what's been done and what has yet to be done. When all done, Reset the Temporary Hide/Isolate and your view should be all good.
