The Revit Families Guide includes several chapters on creating a complex window family. I have found myself in that boat. The guide uses several files created to supplement the tutorial. It assumes that the tutorials and the files were loaded at installation time, but mine were not. It is turning out to be a chore to install the tutorials after the original install. I am specifically looking for Complex_Window_Start.rfa and the other files that are part of the tutorial. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

So far, I have learned something suprising: that windows have symbolic lines in them to insure that they show in plans. I would have never guessed that Revit would cheat like that!

Doors are a prime example of where symbolic lines are used, to show the swing arc and panel in Plan Views, and have the actual panel extrusion show in elevations/3D views, etc.

Not sure where the tutorial file you are looking for is located. (I searched my C: drive and no luck.)

Thank you, Cliff. You unwittingly answered my question. I went back to the Autodesk Families Guide http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=13376394 to post the link for you. I noticed right underneath it was a link to the "dataset". That was it!

What is a "complex window"?

The example Autodesk gives is an operable window combined with a fixed pane. It has a common mullion that has to be custom designed and it appears in plan no matter what the sill height. It takes up 65 pages of the manual, starting page 239. The latest version is 2010.

The Family Guide can be found here:

By the way, I found the files I was looking for. A separate link was right underneath the link to the guide!
