building an existing model

is there a setting to change the default that walls, doors and really anything I'm drawing comes in on the existing phase instead of changing each item after it's creation?

Set the Phase parameter of the view you are working in to "Existing"

We always create "working" views for the purpose of modeling existing elements, with Phase set to Existing. We never show existing views on CD's, so the views get the prefix "WORKING" to separate them out from other documentation views in the Project Browser.

I also use "working" to indicate views that don't show on sheets. It's really handy. Kind of like scratch paper.
