Area won't calc in 2d because of different z coordinates??

I can't calculate area in autocad 2004 lt. I get a message saying the z coordinates differ.
Since I am in 2D mode I am at a loss as to how to fix this problem. Tools - Inquiry - locate point shows all points to have a zero position. Anybody have a fix?
