Hi guys,

Im currently a student at university and I'm using a REVIT 2013 to create a school project, but im having a problem rendering. I have modelled the entire building and site as asked for in the module, but when it comes to rendering, its taking forever even on draft. For example, it took over 2 hours to create a draft render. It usually stops at around 10% and doesnt seem to move for a while. The other students in the class are not having a problem rendering and are completing theirs on high in about 15-20 mins. I have tried getting rid of all lights, and all rpc trees etc to solve it and it still takes forever. Am i doing something wrong? Is my file corrupt? I occasionally have an error when saving that say " Square feet per inches " cannot save, but i dont think this is affecting it as i have solved this now as it was a memory issue. Its not a massive file either. Has anybody come across this before or experienced similar? Any help would be amazing as i have tried so much and its has not worked, i really need to get renders complete in the next week or so.

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help!!

Tim

Check the intergrity of your hard drive. The "sq. ft. per inch" message usually indicates that the file is having trouble being written to the hard drive. Try cleaning up the hard drive--clear up some space, delete .tmp files, defragment, etc.

Can you tell us the specs of your computer?

Windows 7 64 bit? CPU? RAM? Graphics card?

Under output settings there are two options for resolution: screen and printer. Printer resolution will take MUCH MUCH more time than screen. For example, a rendering I did at high resolution took three hours on the screen setting, and three and a half DAYS (24/7) on printer resolution. And, I have a 64 bit multicore machine with 16G memory. I started Friday and let it run over the weekend, so there were no competing processes. It wasn't finished when I got in on Monday.

Also, did you over-model your project, even unknowingly? Sometimes families you download are ridiculously over modeled. I downloaded a set of GE kitchen appliances, only to discover that they were completely modeled inside and out. The gas range even had 3 racks in the oven!

One way to judge the complexity of your model is to watch the screen as Revit renders your view. Some areas wiz by while others linger a few seconds more. Those areas have more work for Revit, and you might investigate why.

Of course, being a student you won't know how much time rendering once took in the old days. A friend of mine was in the pioneering computer graphics lab at Cornell in the late 70's - early 80's. His thesis was a rendering of John Soane's famous Dining Room, with all its Victorian clutter, with a convex mirror on the wall, just for fun. It ran on a Vax 780. He started it before leaving on spring break. When he returned, it wasn't done. Eventually, it did finish, and he passed the course. That was over two weeks, 24/7!

As far as I know, its a cluttered hard-drive thing as Cliff mentioned. Make some space on that HD. I had this happen to me in college too....good 'ol 100Gb hard drive in my dell m90 laptop got filled up! Back when 100Gb was king! ha!

If all else fails, do try the Render in Cloud option. Free to students, although the maximum image dimension is 2000 pixels.
