why does polyline have area?

There are several compound polylines in my dwg that have an area. None of the segments have area individually, there are no overlapping segments, it is not closed, no elevation, has been flattened, no width, no thickness, redrawn (traced), has been exploded and re-exploded, you name it. I do not want the pipe runs to have any area. what am i missing?

By design. It's giving you the area as if the polyline was closed.

If the selected pline has couple of segments and is not closed, AutoCAD calculates the area as the pline closed by adding a straight line from its start point to end point.
