View Full Version : windows in curved walls
I noticed that some windows cannot be placed in curved walls... I really can't find a pattern to it though, as there is no apparent reason...
The strange thing is that you can position in the curved wall any other window (even just a plain opening family) and then change it to the one that would not allow to be positioned in the first place... and it works...
I tried placing the windows in plan, elevations, sections and 3d, with no result...
Is it my build (20030716_1429)?
or does someone know why some windows cannot be placed on curved walls?

I think the issue is to do with the length of the window and the curvature of the wall. You cannot, I think, place a window where the combination of curve and length is such that parts of the window actually breach a face of the wall, i.e. form a chord to the inner face of the curve.
The logic og this is that the larger the window the shallower the curve it needs to be hosted by.
If it is like you say, why would you be able to change the window to the one that wouldn't be placed in the beginning once inserted then?
is it just the initial placing that is not allowed in these cases? :screwy:

Look at the windows you are trying to place. If you place the standard metric fixed window you will find that other than a narrow surround the remainder of the window is almost in line with the external face and so even in a fairly tight curve should not breach the inner face of the wall. If you are placing a custom window it may have a significant offset from the external wall face and therefore may form that chord.
I don't want to get "hung" with this issue, but I am trying with a few different window families installed in the metric library:
There apparently is no difference among
M_Double Hung:0915x1220mm
and
M_Double Hung with Trim:0915x1220mm
the first you can position without any problems, the second cannot be placed... they are the same size, only difference is the trim...
If what you say is correct, then why are they behaving differently?
I only want to understand correctly why this happens...

I placed both families in a 6.0 m radius wall without trouble.
When I reduced the radius to 3.0 m, I got an error message saying the dh without trim would not cut the wall and would be replaced. The family with trim remained. However I was able to manually place an instance of the w/o trim family. :screwy:
I agree, pretty strange behaviour, and needs further investigation.
Could be worth sending to support.

I'm flummoxed then. I admit my comments were based on my own experience and internal logic, which can be pretty flawed, rather than advice from support.

Hello all,
we are working in Revit 2010
(yeah, we'd love to update to 2011. we hopefully will soon!)
Here is our problem:
we want our windows in curved wall to have those two features:
1 - being able to be manually stretched with shape handles
2 - they have to include a glass
As for point 1. it would work by using wall openings instead of
windows, since they are in-place based I guess.
So... how can we have point 1. and 2. together?
Is there a way to "attach" another wall to the wall openings
in a sort of "in-place repeatable family?
See image, where we have another wall (the glass, or a parapet)
that we want to be "attached" to the wall opening sides
Of course we have walls of different curvature in our project!
My guess is that using window families wouldn't work
in any case...
thanks you in advance for your reply!

I'd look at doing this with the curtain wall tools.
Can you post an image of what this should look like in 3d or elevation?
