View Full Version : 2012 Shaded vs. Realistic Material Issues

We're in the process of creating a material library at our company and after going through the process of creating property sets for all of the materials we use, I went through and created materials in our templates based on those property sets. I had checked the box saying "Use Render Appearance for Shading" and when I did, it changed the shaded view to a different (almost grey) color for every material. After going through and assigning render images and RGBs to each of the property sets, you can see how this would be annoying, and now it's becoming an issue to our designers. We're an interior design company so it is very important that we're representing the colors accurately.
Has anybody run into this issue before? I found one solution that suggested we totally uninstall Revit (link (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?121463-2011-Material-quot-Use-Render-Appearance-for-Shading-quot-Problem)) but before taking the nuclear option, I'd like to see if I'm just missing something obvious. See the attached images for an example of what's going on here.

What version of Revit are you using?
Materials and Graphics display have changed drastically from Revit 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Make sure that this is not being caused by a graphics card / display driver problem.
Try turning on/off Hardware Acceleration -- Purple "R" > Options>Graphics>Use Hardware Acceleration ( Direct X)
Also see if there are any warnings about the graphics card/driver.
Try updating the driver, if it is outdated.
See if the problem happens on all machines, or just the one you see the problem on.

We're currently using Revit 2012. All the users are having the same issue, and a majority of us have Hardware acceleration disabled because we were having graphics issues from a Windows update a couple of weeks ago. I have it turned on on my computer, but am having the same issue that everyone else is with the materials. Last week in the process of troubleshooting our graphics I updated my graphics drivers and brought everything up to speed (along with a few other machines in our CAD department). That didn't seem to have any affect on the issue...

Hmm.. OK. Good to check this before getting more involved in troubleshooting.
The Windows update DID affect Revit 2012, and caused a "reverse-color" problem with annotations.
Check here: http://revitclinic.typepad.com/my_weblog/2013/02/color-change-in-revit-2012-after-updating-windows-7.html
Does this happen on ALL projects on ALL machines? Or just a particular project?
Have you uninstalled the Windows Update? ( I know that seems like a lot of work--but there is a chance it would resolve the problem.)
If none of this works--
I suspect it could be a problem with the Material Libraries .
Check Control Panel>Uninstall or Change a Program, and confirm if all of these are in the list:
Autodesk Material Library 2012
Autodesk Material Library Base Resolution Image Library 2012
Autodesk Material Library Medium Resolution Image Library 2012
Autodesk Material Library Low Resolution Image Library 2012
Sometimes these get corrupt, or do not install correctly, particularly from a deployment install.
Other than that, I'm not sure what is causing it.

I've noticed the issue on all computers, and we've disabled Hardware Acceleration on everyone's computer (and that seems to "solve" the problem caused by that Windows update). I uninstalled update KB2670838 last week, and that solved the issue on my machine, so I was able to leave Hardware Acceleration on but the materials are still not shading accurately.
I went in and verified that the Material Libraries were all installed correctly, and I "repaired" each of them. After opening Revit again this morning, it doesn't seem to have affected anything. Grrrr...

Do you have the latest build/Update for Revit 2012 on ALL machines?
Also, as a test, try upgrading the project to 2013.
