Rename parameters in family?

This is a how to post. I have imported and modified some door/frame families into my project file. I have created a door/frame schedule using the standard parameters within the door/frame families within Revit. The imported families contain the same information (door height, width and thickness) but use a differently named parameter... "door height" vs. "height". This has created "holes" in my schedule which I have
manually filled in the schedule.

How do I rename an existing parameter within an existing family?

Open the family outside the project.
Rename the parameters.
Save.
Reload the family into the project. You will get a message saying the family is already in use, chose to overwrite.

Like most things in Revit, I stumble around...this was right in front of my nose. :oops:
