Does anyone know what Autodesk's rules are as far as my installing ACAD on my laptop to use for job site surveys? Do they require that I buy an additional copy for my own use?

I believe Autodesk will allow one copy of the software to be made for home use as long as the same person will be using either copy. I think this should also apply under your proposed use.

Thanks for the quick reply, can anyone confirm this? Don't want to be breaking any laws.

Read your licence agreement and you should find this:
3.1.2 Additional Installation. Except with regard to Educational Institutional, Student and Evaluation Versions only, You may Install and Access a second copy of the Software on the hard disk of a second Computer owned by You or under Your control provided that:
You can also use the portable license utility. You can find out how to do this by typing "portable license utility" in AutoCAD help. I have never done it so I'm not sure on how it is done.

On Autodesk's website the following is stated:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=3970195
5. What if I use more than one computer to do my work? How many activations are permitted per license?
Autodesk recognizes you may sometimes need to operate the software when you are away from your usual work location, for example, while working from home. To accommodate this need, product activation lets you install and activate the software on a second computer owned or controlled by you. Note that the software may be used by only one person and that only one of the two copies may be used at a time. Consult your Autodesk Software License Agreement for complete details about using the software on a second computer.

Exactly what do I need when I go home tonight to load a stand alone licence onto my home computer?
I have the AutoCAD Architecture 2008 CD w/ serial number, request code, and activation code.
Do I need an internet connection?
Do I need authorization from Autodesk? Or my subscription administrator?
Thank you!

You only need an internet connection for "instant" authorization.

The OP never stated what version he is on, at least I didn't see it. The method of using a license at home or on a laptop will vary depending on version and whether or not it is a network or stand-alone license.
With earlier versions using network licenses you had to borrow a license from the license server. Starting with 2008 (maybe 2007) you have to get a home use license agreement you that you have to fill out send back to them. Then they will provide a new serial number and authorization code for your home / laptop computer.
I would call the Autodesk Authorization center (1-800-551-1490) and they should be able to answer your questions accurately based on the version of the software you are using.
