FINE looking Mercedes with a terrific engine but lousy steering.

I don't understand the poll..(?)

1. Rendering & Presentation
4/5
2. Modeling
5/5 - Excellent and then some
3. Drawing co-ordination & Collaboration
5/5 - Excellent
4. Drafting & Annotation
2/5 - Seriously lousy needs major improvement. A lot of this has been talked
about for a very long time. Here are just a few items IMHO that need
attention - text editor (universal justification), leaders, text in dimension
strings, note manager, family (block) manager, etc.
5. Printing
3/5 - Not really sure on this - I am struggling - I would be much happier if it were
more like AutoCAD.

More and better documentation would also be nice. Release 8 is nearly here and very little documentation and no training videos are available for Release 7. Something seems to be very wrong here. I'm hoping to see CBT's perhaps with 8.

Aaron:

I screwed up I meant to have a 1 thru 5 option next each item. Perhaps one of the moderators could fix the poll - sorry I don't know how.

Your complaints are based on what AutoCAD has already for annotating. I can't argue with the fact that AutoCAD has every conceivable setting for plotting and printing. Actually, it has quite a few more features than I would have ever conceived!

:screwy:

Nonetheless, Revit solves the building documentation in such a completely different and holistic manner that I can hardly complain about these pieces. Plus, I've used so many different platforms over the years (Vectorworks, PowerCAD - Mac and PC based apps) that Revit's documentation and annotation toolset seems quite adequate for most of our users' needs.

So while you give the modelling 5/5 I can only give it 4/5, since there are forms that we cannot currently create in Revit, and to some architects (very few, mind you) this would be a deal-killer or require importing geometry from another app.

Revit has a wonderful engine that always getting little boosts here and there as time goes on. And the rest of the car is well-developed too...

...I meant to have a 1 thru 5 option next each item. Perhaps one of the moderators could fix the poll...What you are attempting to do would require a new thread and poll for each question. A poll is limited to one question with a choice of answers that can a user can select either one answer only or multiple answers. So you'll need to create a thread for each question; How do you find Revit: Rendering and Presentation, How do you find Revit: Documentation and Annotation etc.

Steve:

Thanks - for the explanation - I thought this might be the proceedure but seemed a bit cumbersome. I just wanted to compare what I thought was excellent and what was not.

You could "water" down the poll questions to just a 5 out of 5 satisfied, 4 of 5 etc. Then folks can post there detailed responses if they wish? (Did you get the family I emailed you the other day?)

Rendering & Production - 4/5 - Easy for so-so renderings, very difficult for excellent renderings

Modeling - 4.5/5 - Excellent for most uses, but can't be a five until it will work for that small portion Wes mentioned

Drawing coordination & collaboration - 5/5 - blows anything else i've seen out of the water

Drafting & Annotation - 3.5/5 - Still needs a bit of tweaking, but works pretty well overall.

Printing - 4.5/5 - Easy and fast, the only reason it's not 5 is that we can't print schedules directly.

My $.02

Not that it's a good solution, but a quick work-around is to simply export the Schedule to Excel & print it from there, or place it on a dummy sheet for printing and then delete the sheet afterwards... Just FYI.

yeah, there are workarounds, and they aren't too bad, but could be improved...

thanks

I'd just be happy if you could print a window like in autocad without having to add views (i.e. callouts). Once I begin the printing process, I like to be able to accomplish what I want without having to back out of the process. Printing "visible portion of current window" is somewhat difficult to control. One thing I'd like to see is a window proportional to the actual printing boundaries of the page layout (8 1/2 x 11 sheet, for example)...similar to the crop boundary controls in Photoshop or the page boundary tool in Illustrator. If they added just this one thing in the Revit printing dialog, I'd be completely satisfied...with that aspect of Revit, that is.

ohh...and keeping it from always reverting back to the default windows printer would be nice!

I wish it would allow for printing in the back ground, so it doesn't bog down my computer everytime I try to print a set of drawings. I have to wait till the job completes before I can continue to work.

I'm not sure how this poll works.

If I tick a box am I saying that I think Revit has got the feature right (5/5) or does a tick mean I think Autodesk need to sort this one out?
:?

:?I've stepped in and taken a swing at "fixing" the poll. Dick really needed to set up several threads and a poll for each category. Since it is confusing to several so far, I've taken a broad brush, "How do you like Revit now?" approach. Hope it's acceptable to Mr. Barath?

Steve:

I appreciate your effort - however I think you first suggestion is what I was trying to achieve. Needless to say no one is going to say "they do not think Revit is wonderfull" however I think some people will definately tell you that "drafting or printing" is poor.

I would actually rate drafting higher than in ACAD, since in Revit drafting is typically only to enhance sections or details in the model. I do sort of miss polylines, though...

did you know that if you do not have the window maximized "visible portion of current window" will print exactly what is in the window? Just hit the un-maximize button, zoom, and adjust your window to the correct size. Someone posted this tip before and I have been using it ever since. Works great!

Steve:

I would be one happy camper if I could print like you describe. When I try what your suggesting I do not get anything that vaguely resembles my current window. I am using a HP Deskjet 1220c printer.

hmmm... I tried it and it doesn't seem to crop. It allows it to fill in to the edge of the paper. I'm nearly positive that this worked like I was describing before. Haven't tried it for a while, either I was halucinating or it got changed recently...

even still, it is a good way to get at least what you want in the print...

It would be much better if it did work that way. I either wish for it, or wish for it back...
