There must be a way to add up the areas of the rooms in the schedule, but I am not sure of where the command is.

Under sorting and grouping you first set where you want the total
Under formatting you set which parameter you want to calculate the total for

I see the box for grand total but when I look in my schedule I dont see the areas added up. I see that my livable square footage is added up but not the schedule for gross building area. Any idea why I dont see this?

Have you looked in the Formatting tab of the schedule where dhurtubise pointed you?
Formatting tab > select the "Area" parameter you want to total > check box for "Calculate totals"

Are you aware that the schedule can be exported to Excel?
Once in Excel, you can slice and dice the numbers far better than Revit ever will!
