View Full Version : 2013 Revit Tag Text to Fit?

I am trying to make changes to a door tag. Normally 4 characters will fit comfortably, but 5 or 6 extend beyond the graphic shape of the tag.
Is there a way to set the text, or label, to "Fit Text" to a predefined max width by reducing the font width as needed for more characters?

Thanks in advance for your time

There are a few things you can try. The first is to edit the family, and change the label font to a narrow font type. Select the Label ==> Edit Type (under properties Ctrl+1) ==> Text Font. The second thing to try is if you have 'Show Border' checked, stretch the boarder a little wider using the grips. The final thing to try is if you have drawn a border around the label stretch both the label & the lines to make it a little wider.

Hope this helps,
Jeff S.

If you're seeking a 'self-adjusting' text that automatically adjusts the width base on its contents (like in AutoCAD), such functionality does not exist, yet.

The best you could do is create an additional Text Type with a lesser width. You can create a second instance of your Label in the same place and assign it to the slimmer Type. Create two Yes/No Type Parameters to control each Label's visibility, and create two Types, one for normal text, one for slim text.

Well, that bites. (the part about the feature not being avaliable. your answer was fine.)
I was looking to autoadjust the width factor.
The other thing I thought to do was create three versions of the Door Tag.
Since the need will vary by project, and won't change once one is placed in the project, then just choosing the one that fits the need in the begining seems simplier than managing the type in project.

Thank you CADastrophe and jsteinhauer for your input.

you could add a parameter to a reference line. make it an instance parameter. then it will have a grip in model to move it. as you move that line you then have visibility parameters on different text sizes associated with formulas. eg if grip is moved to 0 to 5mm then it'll be a small tag that becomes visible. 5 to 10mm a medium tag.10 to 15+mm a larger tag. etc etc. up to you how complex you go with this. I'll admit it does seem to be a very complex suggestion to achieve something simple but its another idea to add to the mix.
