View Full Version : 2014 Caution - Some Structural Framing families are not accurate!

I have just found out that the Rectangular Hollow Sections (Cold) - 'Corus advance' provided in the Revit Structural Framing library are not correct.

They are drawn with the external radius at 2 times the section thickness, whereas I am advised they actually are external radius = 3 times section thickness.

May not sound a big deal, but it ruins the detail we designed for a side connection, the connecting plate now sticks out beyond the radius, instead of being kept back from it.

Fortunately the hot rolled sections in the library (just called Rectangular Hollow Sections), appear correct as they are external radius = 2 times the section thickness as drawn in the ones I've looked at.

This just raises the question of how much the Revit libraries can be relied on, hopefully this is an isolated error.

Has any one else picked up any errors like this? If so please post, as fore warned is fore armed.

Robin,

You have to be careful when using OOTB Content Libraries or stuff from the web. I don't trust anything that I don't create or check/verify first. Steel members should have a Type Catalog (TC) that goes with the family. It might be as easy to correct the TC, and reloading the family. I have not done much with our Structural components, cause I don't do structural design, but this should be a quick fix.

Cheers,
Jeff S.

Yes, I'll try that Jeff.
This was a little bit nasty though because the root radius of the sections is not published with the usual data on the sections, so not easily checked, and Revit was an available source that appeared to confirm an assumption that it was 2 times thickness which is the case for the hot rolled section. Whoever created the family must have made the same assumption.

Robin
