change structural color in plan view

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this. I have a structural column in my wall that is just the standard out-of-the-box timber column from Revit and I want to change the color in plan view. right now it is showing up gray and I want it to be green. I've already tried going into the family object styles and messing with all the line weights and colors but to no avail. The weird thing is that there is not even a gray color in object styles anywhere. I've also tried changing the object styles for structural columns in my project and I have also tried doing a visibility/graphics override in the plan view that I want the columns green in... nothing seems to be working please help!

Are the columns modeled directly in your Revit file, or are they in a separate file that you have linked into your file? If the latter, is the linked file set to be displayed in half-tone? Or is there another graphic override set on the linked file?

It's just a standard Revit family its not linked. The issue is definitely related to the phase filter I have applied the view. The view is a new construction view and the filter is set to show demo plus new. The columns are elements that were existing but have not been demolished through new construction. When the phase filter is changed the overrides that I applied to the view are visible on the columns. Does anybody know how to change the appearance of phase filters? Or if they can be?

What you describe sound like you are showing Previous + New, but perhaps Demo + New has been modified to show existing, as well. In any event, you can modify the phase filters and the graphic override definitions in the Phasing dialog. In Revit Architecture 2012, this dialog can be accessed from the Manage tab, on the Phasing panel, by selecting the Phases tool. I believe this is an all-or-nothing thing, however - if you modify the settings to change Existing to "By Category", then all existing items will change to "By Category"; there is not a way to have just structural items be "By Category" and all other items to be "Overridden".
