Roof based recessed can

Trying to create a roof based recessed can light
not sure how to get a void to cut into the roof, doesnt seem to so anything.
I tried aking an opening but that goes clear throught the roof when u insert it.
I have done this before but can't remember how, any suggestions?

Just remember to cut the geometry once you've placed the void. For some reason it
looks like I had to be in a 3d view to get the void to cut correct in the family. This
simple example cut 90 degrees to the roof plane.
