How can I get better control of view cube when I want to pick a new view direction. At present it takes the drawing to a blank area of the model space and I have to Zoom extents or dynamics to get back to the drawing? I am using Autocad 2014 and this used to work better in 2010. I have zoom extents turned off.

This is likley a view limits issue. In plan type in the command "Limits" and pick two diagonal opposite corners of a box to set the model & view cube limits. Now your default views should work okay.

In 2014, you can use the viewport controls in the upper left corner to select preset views from a pulldown menu. To finetune your view, press your shift key and the middle mouse button to activate the 3D Orbit command. If you get the same issue with the view controls, check the location of your model. If it is miles from the WCS origin, move it to #0,0,0 to get it back inside the drawing limits. (# indicates absolute coordinates.)
