I am using acad 2000i. My dimensions do not act like they are associated. DIMASO is on but if I change the length of a line using grips the dim does not change. I am under the impression that it should. If I go to the text editor and select that dimension, I see the <> signs which means it is an associated dim. Am I correct? Is there another setting I should be checking?

Hi

Was DimAso = 1 set when the Dimension Objects were first placed?

What happens if you now place Dimension Objects within the drawing file, are they associative?

Does AutoCAD 2000i have the ._DimReAssociate command?

Can you please post an example drawing file that shows the behaviour you explain above.

Have a good one, Mike

DIMASO=1 Here's what i did. I drew a line, put a dim on it using dim, linear, snaped to the end points, then, using grips, I changed the length of the line, The dim did not change. I dont think acad200i has the reassociate command.

Hi

Drawing file seems ok! to me.

When editing the Line (Grips / Stretch / etc) you must also include the Dimension Defpoints in the editing operation if you want the Dimension Object to update.

is it just this particular version of acad (2000i)that does this. My boss is using acad 2000 lite and if he changes the length of a line(by using stretch or extend), the dim also changes without having to include dim defpoint.

Hi

As far as I am aware AutoCAD 2000i and below follow the behaviour I described above ie.

Defpoints must be part of editing process.

AutoCAD 2002 or above, when DimAssoc = 2

Edit Objects directly without including Dimension Objects, Dimension Objects will update (in theory anyway, there are some known bugs / issues that occur under certain conditions).

You don't say what happens when you use the Stretch command. Does it work as you expect?

Yes, It works properly if I use the stretch command and grab the def point and endpoint.

Q.E.D.

The way Mike described it is the way it always was until A2002.

When I use the stretch command the dimensions move with the object. But it does not when I extend the line or trim the line itself. I have worked with AutoCAD 2004 before and I am pretty sure that when the object is trimmed or extended the dimensions would automatically change to fit. I don't want to have to use stretch to make this do this with the dimensions in AutoCAD 2000 it is a pain. If this is my only option in this version let me know and I will just upgrade.

Sorry, Kyle -- It has always worked this way in AutoCAD 2000 and prior. Since STRETCH uses a crossing rectangle (or polygon) to select objects to be stretched, the dimension has probably always gotten selected when the line has been selected. You have never been able to extend or trim a line and had the dimension automatically follow it, at least not in standard AutoCAD up until 2000. You have to select the dimension when stretching with grips, and I imagine you would also have to somehow extend or trim the dimension to get it to update automatically. I don't remember which version changed this behavior.

Does anyone know if, for sure that in AutoCAD 2002 and up if when you draw a line and dimension it, that if you trim or extend the line only that the dimensions will automatically adjust to fit the line. If so let me know and I will upgrade from 2000 right away.

Yep! as long as the Dimension Objects are placed with DimAssoc = 2
