We do it all the time. Several different approaches depending on your budget and technical support team. Workstation virtualization with a private/public cloud is one path. LogMeIn to your main workstation in office is the low cost solution. Revit model navigation on an iPad is not easy or nice.

I have a direct RDP link from my home machine to my work's workstation, bypassing the VPN stuff (which makes my home internet connection super slow). No outside software or applications are used, just the built-in Windows RDP. We had to set up a specific port on our network to make it work, and honestly I don't remember how it was done. Had to change something in my office workstation's registry also, I think.
Aside from that I also just use a copy of Revit installed on my home machine, and connect through a VPN connection for transferring of files.
